SCARBOROUGH REDEVELOPMENT REACHES A NEW MILESTONE
The $60m redevelopment of Scarborough has reached another milestone with planning control handed over from the City of Stirling to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA).
Planning Minister John Day said the State Government and the City of Stirling shared a clear vision for the iconic destination and the transfer of planning control was a significant milestone in building the future of Scarborough.
“While current planning provisions will apply, the MRA will have regard for the future vision in determining development applications until a new planning framework is developed,” Mr Day said.
“Community members will have another opportunity to have their say when the draft master plan is released in the coming months after nearly 3,000 people put forward their ideas for Scarborough’s future via the recent Scarborough Views survey.”
Scarborough’s revitalisation is being delivered with $30 million from the State Government and $27.4 million from the City of Stirling. A draft master plan will be released for public comment in the coming months. A final master plan is expected to be finalised by late 2014 and will inform development of a new planning framework.

The online tool asks users to complete a short survey about what they like, do not like and what improvements they want to see in the area. SCARBOROUGH ALL SET FOR VIBRANT UPGRADE
In January 2013 Premier Colin Barnett announced a $30 million investment towards the urban renewal of Scarborough by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA), in collaboration with the City of Stirling, to transform Scarborough into one of the nation’s best beachfront destinations.
The revitalisation will draw on Scarborough’s unique identity and create a vibrant hub of activity with restaurants, cafes, shops and entertainment, as well as a range of daytime and evening events and activities on offer for people of all ages. It will also enhance Scarborough’s role as a meeting place, providing a welcoming space for families and locals to sit and relax.
Short term initiatives to be delivered include establishing a local MRA presence, building on the City of Stirling’s successful community events program and improving public infrastructure such as lighting and other amenities along the Scarborough beachfront.
Other works that can be expected include a range of foreshore improvements such as new pedestrian promenades along the beachfront, a children’s playground, shade structures, BBQs, public art, pop-up kiosks, landscaping, and overall improvements to access and parking.
